Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania Chair in Sports Medicine and Lecture Series

The Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania Chair in Sports Medicine and Lecture Series began in 1990, and we were honored to have Gloria Beim, MD, (Sports Medicine/Shoulder Fellow ’96) as the 2014 Blue Cross Visiting Professor in November 2014. Dr. Beim is the Chief Medical Officer, Team USA Winter Olympics 2014; Team Physician, Western State Colorado University; President, Alpine Surgery Center; and Official Medical Provider, US Ski & Snowboard Association. Dr. Beim’s lecture was “Chasing an Olympic Dream.” The professorship is funded through Dr. Harner’s Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania Endowed Chair. The primary purpose is to give residents, fellows, and medical students exposure to the leaders in the field of sports medicine.

William F. and Jean W. Donaldson Endowed Chair in Pediatric Orthopaedics Visiting Professor for Orthopaedic Surgery

Michael Vitale, MD, MPH, was the William F. and Jean W. Donaldson Endowed Chair in Pediatric Orthopaedics Visiting Professor for Orthopaedic Surgery in April 2015. Dr. Vitale’s lecture was “Making Spine Surgery Safer for Pediatric Patients.” Dr. Vitale is a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon affiliated with New York Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.

Albert B. Ferguson Jr., MD, Visiting Professor

Our academic year is highlighted with the Albert B. Ferguson Jr., MD, Visiting Professorship. In 2015, we welcomed Mark C. Gebhardt, MD, as the Ferguson Visiting Professor. Dr. Gebhardt is the Frederick W. and Jane M. Ilfeld Professor of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School and serves as the Orthopaedic Surgeon in Chief at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. The title of Dr. Gebhardt’s lecture was “Limb Salvage for Bone Sarcomas in Children and Adolescents.” As the Ferguson Visiting Professor, Dr. Gebhardt also selected the best papers for our annual Residents Research Day. At a luncheon following 2015 Albert B. Ferguson Jr MD Resident Research Day, Dr. Gebhardt presented the best paper awards to:

  • Best Junior Basic Science Paper: Justin Arner, MD (faculty advisors: Christopher Harner, MD and Scott Tashman, PhD)
  • Best Senior Basic Science Paper: Lloydine Jacobs, MD (faculty advisors: James Kang, MD, Dr. Gwendolyn Sowa, and Nam Vo, PhD)
  • Best Senior Clinical Paper: Gele Moloney, MD (faculty advisor: Ivan Tarkin, MD)

The awards are generously provided by Dr. Jack Smith, President of the Pitt Orthopaedic Alumni Association.

During his visit, Dr. Gebhardt was able to visit with Dr. Bernard Fisher. Dr. Gebhardt had served as a fellow with Dr. Fisher in 1977–78. Dr. Fisher is a Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. At the age of 95, Dr. Fisher still works every day!
