Pioneering Liver Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Thomas Starzl, Passed Away

Dr. Thomas Starzl, pioneering live transplant surgeon passed away in his home on Saturday, March, 4, 2017.

The Department sends its condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Starzl.

 

In 2010, Dr. Starzl was one of only seven other Pitt School of Medicine faculty who had received the honor of appointment as Distinguished Professor at the University of Pittsburgh.  In addition to Dr. Fu, the list included Drs. Thomas Starzl (Transplant Surgery), Julius Youngner (Polio Vaccine), Peter Safar (CPR), Bernard Fisher (Mastectomy/Breast Surgery), Ake Grenvik (Critical Care Medicine), Richard Simmons (Immunology/Kidney Transplant), and Thomas Detre (UPMC Architect).  

Dr. Fu initiated the first Distinguished Service Professor Luncheon at the University Club.  The luncheon attendees from left to right are:  Drs. Freddie Fu, Thomas Starzl, Bernard Fisher, Richard Simmons, Ake Grenvik, and Julius Youngner.  Dr. Peter Safar was deceased, and Dr. Thomas Detre was unable to attend.
